Winter’s Deceptive Killers
While this winter’s weather has been quite
different than the past two years, it is not
over yet! So just in case the weather turns,
here are some recommendations on how to keep
you safe:
• Winter is the season of “deceptive
killers” because many of the deaths
associated with it are indirectly related to
storms. People die while shoveling snow,
from accidents on icy roads or carbon
monoxide poisoning from a generator used
inside the home. Since we usually have a
significant warning for winter weather, you
have time to prepare.
• Icy roads are treacherous. The two major
causes of icy roads are freezing rain and
sleet. Freezing rain is rain that freezes
when it hits the ground and creates a
coating of ice on roads, sidewalks, trees
and power lines. Sleet is rain that turns
into ice pellets before they reach the
ground. Either one will cause you problems.
To get the latest information on road
conditions, call toll free 1-888-783-6783or
visit www.511pa.com. For SEPTA updates visit
www.septa.org. Coaster information can be
obtained by calling the Mobility Hotline at
866-507-4857.
• If your heat goes out and you decide to
use a generator or another piece of
equipment that can provide heat, be sure to
locate it outside the home and away from
doors, windows and vents that would allow
carbon monoxide into your home. Play it safe
and install a carbon monoxide alarm on every
level of your home and outside sleeping
areas. If one goes off, immediately open a
door or window and move to a fresh air
location.
• Make sure that you have an Emergency
Preparedness Kit for both your home and car.
For the winter your car kit should include:
a shovel, windshield scraper, flashlight,
battery powered radio, extra batteries,
water, snack food, matches, hat mittens and
gloves, a first aid kit, any medications,
blanket, a tow chain or rope, road salt,
booster cables and emergency flares. Be sure
your home kit includes: rock salt, sand,
snow shovels, enough heating fuel, a good
supply of dry seasoned wood for your
fireplace or wood-burning stove and enough
blankets and other articles of warm
clothing.
• Be sure to have a Family Communication
Plan. In the event that all members of the
family are not together and phone service is
limited, select one person outside the area
to call and relay messages to family
members.
• When you go out to shovel snow, avoid
stimulants like caffeine or nicotine which
may increase your heart rate and constrict
your blood vessels. Stretch your muscles out
in your arms and legs. Begin shoveling
slowly and take plenty of breaks in between.
Stay Warm, Stay Safe!

Sewer Lateral
Project
In an effort to improve
the Borough's sewer system by reducing the
inflow and infiltration into the system and
treatment plant, the Borough along with the
Army Corps of Engineers, will be conducting
the Sewer Lateral Repair Project to start in
the fall of 2010.
The work will be limited to the West Vine
Street area.
The project will identify and repair sewer
laterals connected to the Borough's sanitary
sewer system. Underground cameras will
be utilized to aid in the detection of
potential problem areas, and once
identified, these affected laterals, which
connect a properties system to the main
sewer lines under the road, will be
repaired.
Residents and business owners will be
informed as to temporary water restrictions.
Information will be sent via direct mail.
