Winter’s Deceptive Killers

While this winter’s weather has been quite different than the past two years, it is not over yet! So just in case the weather turns, here are some recommendations on how to keep you safe:

• Winter is the season of “deceptive killers” because many of the deaths associated with it are indirectly related to storms. People die while shoveling snow, from accidents on icy roads or carbon monoxide poisoning from a generator used inside the home. Since we usually have a significant warning for winter weather, you have time to prepare.

• Icy roads are treacherous. The two major causes of icy roads are freezing rain and sleet. Freezing rain is rain that freezes when it hits the ground and creates a coating of ice on roads, sidewalks, trees and power lines. Sleet is rain that turns into ice pellets before they reach the ground. Either one will cause you problems. To get the latest information on road conditions, call toll free 1-888-783-6783or visit www.511pa.com. For SEPTA updates visit www.septa.org. Coaster information can be obtained by calling the Mobility Hotline at 866-507-4857.

• If your heat goes out and you decide to use a generator or another piece of equipment that can provide heat, be sure to locate it outside the home and away from doors, windows and vents that would allow carbon monoxide into your home. Play it safe and install a carbon monoxide alarm on every level of your home and outside sleeping areas. If one goes off, immediately open a door or window and move to a fresh air location.

• Make sure that you have an Emergency Preparedness Kit for both your home and car. For the winter your car kit should include: a shovel, windshield scraper, flashlight, battery powered radio, extra batteries, water, snack food, matches, hat mittens and gloves, a first aid kit, any medications, blanket, a tow chain or rope, road salt, booster cables and emergency flares. Be sure your home kit includes: rock salt, sand, snow shovels, enough heating fuel, a good supply of dry seasoned wood for your fireplace or wood-burning stove and enough blankets and other articles of warm clothing.

• Be sure to have a Family Communication Plan. In the event that all members of the family are not together and phone service is limited, select one person outside the area to call and relay messages to family members.

• When you go out to shovel snow, avoid stimulants like caffeine or nicotine which may increase your heart rate and constrict your blood vessels. Stretch your muscles out in your arms and legs. Begin shoveling slowly and take plenty of breaks in between.
Stay Warm, Stay Safe!

Chestnut Street Trail Open

The walking bridge on Chestnut Street, which is part of the joint Hatfield Borough/Hatfield Township Chestnut Street Trail, is now open to pedestrians.  Citizens on foot or bicycle now have passage from the Borough's town center to the rear entrance of School Road Park.  Along the way, trail users can access a number of public parks, including Electric Plant Park, the Liberty Bell Trail, the Chestnut Street Trail Park, and the Hatfield Community Park.  People can use the trail to reach other destinations including the Liberty Bell Plaza, the Hatfield Aquatic Center, the Dog Park, the Hatfield Police Station and both municipal buildings.

The bridge rehabilitation project, a vital element in the collaborative effort to link the Borough and Township's park systems, will be finished in the spring once the beautification process is complete.  A dedication ceremony will be scheduled.

Sewer Lateral Project

In an effort to improve the Borough's sewer system by reducing the inflow and infiltration into the system and treatment plant, the Borough along with the Army Corps of Engineers, will be conducting the Sewer Lateral Repair Project to start in the fall of 2010.
The work will be limited to the West Vine Street area.

The project will identify and repair sewer laterals connected to the Borough's sanitary sewer system.  Underground cameras will be utilized to aid in the detection of potential problem areas, and once identified, these affected laterals, which connect a properties system to the main sewer lines under the road, will be repaired.

Residents and business owners will be informed as to temporary water restrictions.  Information will be sent via direct mail.

Leaf Pick-Up/ Curbside Chipping/ Power Line Maintenance

Leaves
The Borough conducts a Fall Leaf collection every Monday from late October through the beginning of December.  Residents must place leaves in biodegradable paper bags which can be purchased at any home improvement store and also at the Borough Hall for $.25 each.

Limbs
The Borough also conducts a Tree Limb Chipping program every Spring & Fall.  The intent of this collection is for the clean-up of debris from limbs that have fallen over time.  Residents who choose to cut down a tree or bush on their property must make other arrangements for disposal.

  • Only limbs and branches up to 6" in diameter will be chipped.

  • Branches should be placed by curb in an orderly pile with the trunk ends facing toward the road.

  • Hedge and shrub clippings, tree stumps, as well as branches with thorns will not be collected.

Discarded Christmas trees are picked up the first 2 Mondays of every new year.  Trees should be cleaned of any decorations and placed by the curb for early morning removal.
