Hatfield Borough Electrical Service

Hatfield Borough owns and operates its own electric power company. Hatfield Borough Electric is one of 35 public power (municipal) systems in Pennsylvania and one of almost 2,000 in the country. More than 35 million Americans are served by community-owned electric utilities. There are about 270 private, profit-making electric companies and about 1,000 nonprofit rural electric cooperatives in the country. PECO Energy and PPL are two investor-owned utilities which serve Southeastern Pennsylvania.

Hatfield Borough Electric began electric production in 1931 and continued generating electric until 1977 when the price of diesel fuel became prohibitive. It was then that Hatfield Borough Electric began purchasing wholesale power from PPL, as we do today.

On the average, Hatfield Borough customers pay 30% less for electricity than do PECO Energy customers and the rates are competitive with PPL.
